I am prone to get hooked up on new stuffs and hobbies real fast and the recent subject of interest is Mooncakes! Yes, mooncakes – those round little smooth sugary pastes wrap up in dough of all sort of attractive shapes, are what caught my interest recently. As the mid-autumn festival draws near, those mooncake manufacturers have already start selling their products although it is still one month plus away. As I have never bought and really care about mooncakes in all my life before, I decided to do a little exploration this mid-autumn.
Staying in USM has left me not choice of place for shopping, and thus I was left with little choice for mooncake brands. I decided to try my luck at Billion in hope for a good deal. So I was laid with a few choices of mooncake brands, that is Oversea, Kam Lun Tai, Hei Yuet Thong (not sure about spelling) and baker’s cottage. There were 20% off for Oversea and Bakers and only 10% for Kam Lun Tai, but if I buy 4 KLT, I get a Nyonya flavour Mooncake for free. About HYT, I’m not so sure…
After some deep thinking, I decided to buy Oversea’s Noble Delight and Golden Starlight and KLT’s Pearly Jade Delight and Black Sesame with 1 yolk. Not sure about my choice at that time too, there were so many choices. SO, without further ado, let’s get on to the tasting part!
Noble Delight
Haha… I have to apologize on this one, ate it straight away I came home and forgotten to take any snaps on it, manage to find its pic on net though. Its paste is quite delicious, not purely of lotus paste but a mixture of Huai Shan, Pitaya fruit, lotus, and white bean. One can definitely taste the lotus paste, but with improvisation, mildly sweet, smooth and just a perfect mix of ingredients with the right proportion.

aiks... after eating oni thought of snapping...hehe, guess the stomach signal reaches my brain the fastest
Pearly Jade Delight
Oh my god, chaos! Ok, maybe not dat bad… The combination is bold, yet not so harmonic. Paste is made of lotus n pandan… erm… not bad, but tasted like kaya pandan. Then before the yolk(non-egg) is a layer which I guessed is some sort of rice paste which have jelly or gelatine and also the layer which spoils the whole mooncake taste. Apart from that, the nut is getting in my way of chewing… Overall, not bad but not so tempting as it names suggest.
Black Sesame with 1 yolk
Erm, can definitely taste the lotus paste, but the sesame layer is quite thin that I actually find difficulty to distinguish it from lotus paste apart from its colour. Not bad…Yolk is there…lol… nothing much different from normal lotus paste mooncake
Golden Starlight – haven’t taste…haha. Next Update maybe…
So after tasting three of the mooncake, I came to a hypothesis that branded mooncakes are not so mighty as their fame… a rather rash conclusion.. so I decided to sample more. So I went shopping for mooncakes at Jusco, 1U and found more brands such as Six Happiness, Hotel Equatorial, Yu Ai, Bisgood, Foh San, Thai Thong and many more mouth watering brands of mooncakes. The fancy packagings are so eye-catching that at some point, i was deciding to buy choose the mooncakes manufacturers based on their packaging! lol
But alas, i was running out of time, so I decided to just buy a pure lotus paste Mooncake from six Happiness and another for my friend (cant reveal the brand yet for secrecy purpose…lol). Will be sampling it in the morning, later
Till next post.
